thought × layer
想×層
Two-person exhibition Akinori UENO Miki (Akinori Ueno × Miki)
2013. Gallery H2O, Kyoto, Japan

thought × layer overlays painting and projected CGI animation onto a single surface. Opposing elements — individual and collective, silence and clamor, light and shadow — were each created from the two artists' own perspectives and then layered into one work.
Created as the unit Akinori UENO Miki, with Akinori Ueno as CGI director, the projected work was placed at the center of the room, surrounded by Miki's paintings.

The base is two paintings of lotus: one in full bloom, the other fallen to stem and calyx. When the CG animation is projected, set to Debussy's Arabesque, the still images begin to move, until it is no longer clear where the painting ends and the projection begins, raising the question of whether what we see is real or illusion. At its center, the lotus — rising from muddy water to bloom — stands as a symbol of tenacious, resilient life that flowers precisely because of the mud of the secular world. Conceived under the influence of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and the nuclear accident that followed, the work holds an affection for life that endures through disaster and conflict.
